Mechanics guide to maintaining your road bike.

If you're a road cyclist, maintaining your bicycle is essential for both performance and safety. Regular maintenance ensures that your bike is in top condition and extends its lifespan.

Here are some key things to keep in mind when it comes to road bicycle maintenance.

What maintenance does a road bike need?

Road bikes require regular maintenance to keep them functioning at their best. After riding your road bike, you should inspect it for any damage or wear and tear.

  • Check the tires for any punctures or cuts and make sure that they are inflated to the correct pressure.

  • Inspect the brakes and gears to ensure that they are working properly, and tighten any bolts or fittings that may have come loose during the ride.

  • You should also clean the bike with a soft brush and mild soap, paying particular attention to the drivetrain, wheels, and brakes.

How often do road bikes need maintenance?

The frequency of maintenance depends on how often you ride your road bike and the conditions in which you ride. As a general rule, you should get your bike serviced at least once a year or every 2,000km.

If you ride your bike more frequently or in harsher conditions, such as dirt roads or wet weather - which can occur often when cycling on the Sunshine Coast, it may require more frequent maintenance.

Should you clean your road bike after every ride?

Cleaning your road bike after every ride is not necessary, but it is recommended. Road grime, dirt, and sweat can build up on your bike, which can lead to premature wear and tear. You should at least wipe down the bike frame and rims with a dry cloth after each ride to remove any debris.

You should also clean and lubricate the chain regularly to ensure that it remains in good condition.
