Services
and pricing

At BikeTailor you'll always be dealing with me, Shaun, a professional bicycle mechanic with over a decade of experience. Since 2016 I have run my bespoke workshop offering a level of service and attention to detail beyond what is typically available in retail bike shops.

Prior to working in the cycling industry I was an elite athlete and I understand the benefits of having my equipment running as efficiently and smooth as possible.

As a runner I held multiple New Zealand national titles for cross-country and road running and competed at World Championship level. My running career gained me a scholarship to Stony Brook University (New York, U.S.A.) where I completed a Bachelor of Science degree. As a cyclist I have raced at elite level across multiple disciplines.

Im always happy to discuss all things bike and training related.

Bike servicing

There are many aspects of a bicycle that need maintenance and servicing. Bottom brackets and headsets are susceptible to water damage, but can be protected with a good clean and grease. Gear and brake cables are stressed and strained from long kilometres in the saddle and may need replacing, saving you from potentially expensive fixes and ruined rides. Wheel bearings and derailleur pivots need cleaning and lubing to preserve their integrity and keep them working smoothly.

All this and more will be checked and performed in a general service with BikeTailor. Depending on the condition of your bike, repairs needed and a detailed discussion with you, services usually take between 2-4 hours.

Charged at $90 per hour plus parts.

Bike builds

Building a custom bicycle is not only fun, but can provide you with the perfect ride to suit your needs and budget. Whether you want a modern road racer, a vintage tourer, a retro mountain bike or a bike packing rig, I am always excited to help you create your dream bike. I can help source parts for your build or you can bring me what you have. Pop in for a coffee and chat to start the process, or get in touch below.

Bike fits

I see the fit process as an ongoing relationship with my clients, a lot like bike servicing. Many things influence how we feel on the bike, such as fitness and flexibility, lifestyle (work/family/recreation) and injuries.  As these things change (for better or worse) the way we interact with our bicycle(s) will also change.

Proper and ongoing bike fits will help to improve several riding aspects as your body changes:

  • Comfort (on the bike and off)

  • Performance (power output)

  • Handling (and aerodynamics)

  • Enjoyment (and longevity)

My initial bike fit involves a consult and discussion around your riding and injury history, goals and riding style(s), an off bike assessment, an on bike assessment and video/picture analysis.

I highly recommend a follow up fit within 3 months to ensure everything is feeling good and whether changes need to be made based on your feedback. There after, just like servicing your bike, I recommend coming back every 6 months to check-in and tweak position if necessary.

The initial fit usually take between 1-2 hours and follow up will usually be around 30 mins.

Charged at $90 per hour.

Vintage frames: sales and builds

A vintage frame is often a great place to start for a custom build, providing a high quality platform to put your mark on.  Keep it period correct, or go modern; the choice will depend on your budget, aesthetic preferences and riding aspirations.

I have a great selection of high quality steel frames and forks in a range of sizes, or we can find something else if there isn't something here that you're after.

Workshops/classes

I am passionate about bicycles and love to share my knowledge and enthusiasm. I provide custom workshops tailored to your experience level and desired learning outcome. We can organise 1-on-1 sessions or small group workshops learning things like basic maintenance and tyre swaps, all the way to building your own wheels or bicycle.  I will provide the tools and space in my studio.

Charged at $90 per hour for 1-on-1 sessions and an extra $10 per person for small groups.

Contact me to suggest workshop ideas, or to enquire about what's coming soon.

Wheel repairs and builds

Similar to a custom bike build, a set of custom wheels can provide you with the perfect ride to suit your needs and budget. Whether you want a set of ultra light climbing wheels, a solid and sturdy set of gravel or mountain bike wheels, a set of deep carbon wheels for time-trials and crit racing, or a hard to come by solution for a retro bike build, I am always excited to help you out. I can help source parts for your build or you can bring me what you have. Pop in for a coffee and chat to start the process, or get in touch below.

Charged at $90 per hour.

Testimonials

Geoff Cloud

'Hands down,' the best bike mechanic I have come across. I have 5 bikes - single speed, road and gravel - aluminium, steel, titanium. Shaun has helped with servicing, upgrades and bespoke tweaking with all of them. He is extremely knowledgeable, personable, reliable and provides a truly individualized service. He is absolutely trustworthy and will not over charge or suggest unnecessary replacement parts on your bike.
